Lynn Live Oaks Burned by Late Season Injury

Live Oaks hamstrung by season ending injury to Lee Smith.

The Vintage Base Ball Herald has learned from a reputable source that Lynn Live Oaks, star power striker and starting first sacker, Lee "Big Dog" Smith is out for the remainder of the season with a hamstring injury. The blow comes at a time when the Lynn Pride movement was picking up momentum heading into the final two contests of the season. While this doesn't leave the Lynn team completely crippled, it does take away some of the thunder from the middle of a line-up that was starting to gain in confidence. It will be a test for captain Mark Scappichio to see what he can do to band-aid this gashing wound in order to finish strong. Time will tell what effect this will have on the lads from the City of Sin but we can only imagine that the fellas will dig deep and come away with strong performances in these final games.

Deadball Era Baseball Footage

For me, the deadball era of baseball is where I wish modern baseball stopped advancing in terms of equipment and rules. The ball was dead, meaning that rather than waiting around for a homerun, teams manufactured runs. Players played for keeps. Managers actually had to manage and of course, the pitchers had to hit.

It was a rough and tumble game described as "something like a war." The players were characters and the characters were players. And so it goes.

Game Report 9/17/11 - Harvestfest by Ipswich Ale Tripleheader

Huzzah! What a glorious day for ballists and cranks alike in the beautiful fall New England sun! The fantastic taste of Tennessee BBQ, the wonderful sounds of live music, great tasting Ipswich Ale and Mercury Soda Pop all perfectly complimenting the main event... a tripleheader of Vintage Base Ball.
On behalf of everyone who attended, a big thank you to everyone who made this possible.

The matches commenced at 11am. Cappy Sheehy of the Essex Base Ball Club meeting the captain of the Bristol Blues, of Bristol Rhode Island on the field for the bat toss to determine home field advantage with the honorable umpire Mr. Greybeard himself, Jeff Peart presiding.

Cappy Sheehy got the upper hand on the bat toss (pun intended) and Essex took the field with the advantage of last turn at the striker line for the game.

This would be a battle of two heavyweights. Essex Base Ball Club had a great summer with only a couple of blips against Melrose to mar the record. Bristol also has been a stalwart and showed up ready to prove their ability to compete on any field.

The game started a bit chippy with some pushing and shoving as Bristol took an early lead to begin the contest. Gentlemanly sportsmanship as always too precedence and the competitors were able to shake hands and allow the scoreboard to dictate the winner. A favorable result for all involved.

Essex quickly ate away at Bristol's opening 3 tally lead by adding two aces of their own in the first inning. Chris "Monkey" Sheehy leading the way on both offense and defense. The game would remain tense until the waining moments.

Essex started to pull ahead by the fourth taking a 7-3 lead when the Bristol giant awoke from it's slumber. Three aces in the fifth and another in the seventh would even the score at seven runs apiece.

It was the eight inning where Essex would strike their final blow. A lone run that would take the first game. Brian "Wiz" Besse finished what he started and closed the door from the pitcher's line. What was once a rarity, the hidden ball trick, was tried successfully by Essex just a week after Lynn had pulled the same gag.

The second contest was just as close with Essex having to come from behind to take the victory. Bristol, ready to avenge the first game loss jumped out to take a 4-1 lead. It wasn't enough, however as Essex found themselves on top by a score of 7-5 going into the final half of the ninth. Bristol managed a run and looked poised to force an extra stanza but again Essex had enough to finish them off.

Essex took both games of the hotly contested games of the doubleheader but the real winners were the cranks who were treated to some top notch vintage base ball!

The third game wasn't so close. With a party, almost "Woodstock-esque" atmosphere brewing and live music blaring, Lynn pounded the Boston Red Stockings. It wasn't for lack of effort by the Red Stockings. Late in the game they made a good push and scored a respectable ten runs. It was Lynn's offense. Hit after hit after hit after hit. 21-10 would be the final in favor of the Live Oaks. Captain Mark Scappichio spoke of the growing "Lynn Pride" movement that was sweeping the Vintage Base Ball world. The cheers of the cranks, "are bringing tears to my eyes," he was heard saying. It was the crack of the bats however that would bring tears to the eyes of Boston. The were gracious in defeat however, and wore the most brilliant white hand knit caps. OK, perhaps they were outsourced and made in China by machines... but back in 1861 they would have been hand knit... and that is what counts.

So how did your faithful blogger do? Um... er... well... not so good at the plate. Really well in the field. But it will be the miseries at the plate that will dog me until the next Lynn contest on October 2nd. May my bat come awake sometime before then.

For those of you who missed last weekend's game between the Lynn Live Oaks and the Melrose Pondfeilders (myself included), there is a brief but excellent game account posted on the Essex Base Ball Club website. All I will say is that any young crank who is lucky enough to have a Ralph "Speedball" Hebb trading card could be holding a substantial investment towards their future financial success.

Players Needed for Upcoming League Next Season

Despite the current season winding down as fall starts to color the leaves, there is still excitement in the air for vintage base ball! Players are currently being recruited for the new league shaping up to play starting next spring at Spencer Peirce Little Farm in Newbury. Men's league ball players, softball players, anyone willing to stand as a striker at the line and take a swing to preserve the history of the game should apply. Umpires, scorers and others are needed. Take part in the rich tradition that is the nation's pastime!

Their is a great opportunity this weekend. Come and see the game played as it was back in the days of the Civil War. 1860's style. The games start at 11am this Saturday in Newbury. Tripleheader! Essex Base Ball Club to challenge the Bristol Blues from Connecticut in the first two games and then Mudville takes on the Lynn Live Oaks in the second contest.

If you are interested in playing, see the tab on the top portion of the blog for further information. Or better yet... come out and experience the game for yourself, meet some of the players and get involved. Look for the Essex Base Ball Club tent and take a look at the hand stitched lemon-peel hard balls, the vintage bats or other old time base ball memorabilia.

Having been trying to rebuild my constitution to full strength while vacationing in Acadia National Park, your vintage base ball eyes and ears was dismayed to learn that Melrose struck yet another blow to the Essex/Lynn Base Ball Club partnership. A few weeks before it was the mighty Essex team that fell to the upcoming Melrose Pondfeilders. This weekend it was reported that the dastardly nine from Melrose were again up to their trickery and bested the Lynn Live Oaks, 19 Aces to only 11. I am sure this has got the dander up on everyone on the Lynn side and for the upcoming game this weekend on Saturday, September 17th. Mudville had better be prepared to play vigorously with spirit and ginger if they are to best the Lynn team in a second contest in a row. Myself, I will be taking the field for Lynn, so let's all hope and pray that doesn't set things back a bit for the local lads.

It's a grand day of vintage base ball planned as Ipswich Ale is throwing a festival at Spencer Peirce Little Farm in Newbury. The games begin at 11am and all are welcome without charge to enjoy the fun. There will be BBQ, live music, Ipswich Ale Beer Trucks complete with Jim-Jam Hot Dogs and of course, vintage ballists battling in out on the playing field for the cranks favour! Come by and see the excitement. Also, don't forget to drop by the Essex Base Ball Club tent and see some of the exhibits of base ball lore or perhaps purchase a souvenir.

Vintage Base Ball 1860's Colorado Style

Some great footage here of vintage base ball being played in Colorado. These people really seem to have the idea of the game. Looks like a base ball club went out to play some of the farm hands. You have to love the outfields playing in the high grass. If we did that here in New England we would all have lyme disease. Of course, I suppose they battle rattlesnakes or some other varmits. At the very intro is a fair foul hit, also they ring some sort of run when tallying an ace. Check out the short documentary for yourself!

One thing I like is the simplicity of the umpires uniform. While I prefer Greybeard's coat tails and top hat there would be something to be said on the farm for new umpires to wear this less formal dress with the straw hat. Easier on the wallets and perhaps a little bit easier in the heat. Just a thought...

There has been no small bit of consternation amongst cranks and ballists alike in regards to the weather forecast for this weekend. At The Vintage Base Ball Herald we believe that once again the predictors of doom that lurk on every news broadcast and newspaper article will once again prove their fallibility when it comes to determining the future. Any potential storm still has a ways to travel and the delay of only a few hours would provide plenty of time for the games to be played under the sunny skies we have enjoyed all summer. Just in case, a little bit of the Boss to keep the rain away...

The Proverbial Field of Dreams

Spencer Peirce Little Farm has become the Vintage Base Ball field of dreams. Home to a new vintage base ball league next year, it has hosted many a compelling match during this current season.

Who can forget Melrose's exciting comeback victory in the final stanza over the Cincinnati Red Stockings?

The rolling carpet of grass that makes the playing surface and corn stalks in the outfield are everything that the 1860's style ballist can ask for.

Cranks (fans) line the third sack line hoping to cheer their favorites and catch history in the making. Firstbase also offers additional seating opportunities.

Chickens run free and harass even the best hands in leftfield. A large turkey strolls about. Kids eat Jim Jam hot dogs and the bigger, older kids known as adults swig down some quality Ipswich Ale served fresh from their beer truck. A touch of 2011 adds running water and comfortable restrooms in the farms quaint gift shop.

This Sunday is a great chance to take in all of this base ball splendor plus enjoy live music, craft exhibits and plenty of stuff for kids! Why not stop by the farm, 5 Littles Lane in Newbury, around 11am, take in the festival and then head over to the Essex Base Ball tent and watch some of our national pastimes heritage unfold before your eyes?

Come one, come all Vintage Base Ball Cranks, music lovers and anyone who enjoys having a good time. Spencer Peirce Little Farm, 5 Little Lane, Newbury Ma is hosting a bash that will be remembered by the 2,000-3,000 people expected to attend for a long time.

The Vintage Base Ball tripleheader starts at 11am with Lynn Live Oaks and Essex Base Ball Club playing the first game. Lynn will then challenge the Melrose Pondfeilders and the afternoon will wrap up with Essex and Melrose duking it out.

The afternoon also features lots of live music, food and entertainment for the entire family!

Essex Base Ball Club has scheduled an amazing weekend of vintage Base Ball! Saturday the team will be playing at LeLacheur Park, home of the Lowell Spinners. A ticket to that evening's Spinners game gets you in to see the vintage base ball game which starts promptly at 4pm and also to that night's Spinners game which will start shortly after (5pm). There will also be a Beatles cover band holding a concert after the game! What a value!!!

Melrose star striker, Dave Leopardi takes all four sacks in a single flying stride

Amazing day as always at Spencer Peirce Little Farm in Newbury! The fun starting early in the morning with the Fiber festival and continued late into the day with a vintage base ball tripleheader. Special thanks to my wife Karen for taking all the pictures!

The base ball kicked off with the visiting Cincinnati Red Stockings taking on the Melrose Pondfeilders. Melrose has been on a hot streak lately but the visitors from the Buckeye State seemed to control the game early. Leftfielder and third sacker Dave Leopardi swung the momentum in favor of the local lads with a huge homerun. That began a comeback that will be remembered for a long time in vintage base ball circles. The Pondfeilders would enter the bottom of the ninth down by a single run. Quickly Melrose strikers found their way on the bases and the hometown cranks began to cheer. Wham! A deep knock would score two runs and deliver victory to the Melrose nine!

Big Dog Lee Smith claims the bag.

The second game between the Lynn Live Oaks and Cincinnati would not have the dramatics but would feature the growing abilities of this Lynn Base Ball Club that is quickly shaping into top form. The Live Oaks got out to an early 5-3 lead and never looked back. Solid defense by crank favorites "Cappy" Sheehy and hurler Ralph Hebb kept the lead intact. Big Dog Lee Smith and the batting order then poured on the firepower. Cappy, Monkey Sheehy and Ryan "Siff" Sifferlen rounded the bases time and time again. Ben Zalman grabbed ball after ball on the fly in left field. It was too much for the already game weary Cincinnati who played with spirit and ginger but fell 12-3.

The final game between the Brewers of Ipswich and Mudville highlighted what has been a tough season for the expansion Ipswich club. They played with heart and started to come on late in the game... but too late. By the time their strikers had struck, Mudville had already delivered the final blow. This blow won't be fatal for the Ipswich club, however. Their heart and determination was evident and time will prove their medal.

Special thanks to the gentlemen of Cincinnati who made the long journey and played with such heart and conviction.

Remember there is two more great games on Sunday 8/14 starting at noon on Boston Common. Essex vs. Cincinnati and then Cincinnati vs. Mudville to complete the doubleheader.

The Red Stockings are Coming! The Red Stocking are Coming!

The Cincinnati Reds may be the direct lineage with America's first professional baseball club but it is the vintage base ball club the Cincinnati Red Stockings who keep the amateur heritage of this proud franchise alive. Recreating the games of the 1860's this collection of ballists reminds us all of a time when the game was played for more than the right to sell tickets and concessions.

The Red Stockings are invading the Bay State over the weekend to play four games against thre of the local nines. On Saturday at Spencer Peirce Little Farm in Newbury they will be taking on both the Melrose Pondfeilders and the Lynn Live Oaks. The Pondfeilders are fresh off a successful trip to Rochester, NY and the Lynn Live Oaks recently defeated the Ipswich Brewers in grand fashion. The doubleheader will be extended into a third game as the Brewers of Ipswich will finish the day in a contest against Mudville. One hopes that Casey will again be thwarted and there will be but no joy in Mudville again. The fun begins at 11am.

Sunday on Boston Common at Noon the Red Stockings of Cincinnati will challenge the local iron as Essex Base Ball Club will test the Cincinnati natives ability to withstand two days in the heat and humidity of the New England summer. A second game will also be played between Cincinnati and Mudville using the old "Massachusetts Game" rules... this means that runners may be "soaked" by being pegged with the ball for an out.

The Red Stockings sweep in to town carrying a great deal of credentials themselves. Most notably a first class website and uniforms that hearken to the glory days of old. Take a gander at http://www.1869reds.com/.

Our scouts warn us that this club has both speed and veteran leadership with ballists such as Mr. "Speedy" Obermeyer and "Ice Wagon" Mark Hurr.

It should be fun weekend for Cranks and Ballist alike. Why not come out to either historic Spencer Peirce Little Farm in Newbury and again on Sunday at the Boston Common in Boston, MA for a weekend of base ball the way it was meant to be played?

Local cranks are in for a real treat this weekend as the Cincinnati Red Stockings will be travelling from far and wide to test the local nines of Melrose and Lynn. The triple header will also close out with a finale of Mudville vs. Ipswich. A chance to get your fill of vintage base ball for the week while surveying the beautiful property at Spencer Peirce Little Farms. Your faithful blogger has recovered from illness and has regained the constitution necessary to suit up for the Lynn Live Oaks. Come cheer me on and meet Arturo! Essex Base Ball Club is hosting an OPEN GAME on Saturday. Come one, come all.... vintage ballists, modern ball players, and anyone else interested in trying their hand at base ball as played in the 1860's. The event starts at noon at Spencer Peirce Little Farms in Newbury. 5 Littles Ln, Newbury, MA.

Sunday, some of the gentleman of the Essex club will be hosting a workshop and demonstration (not a full game) for kids and families at the Ipswich Museum. The fun starts at noon and afterward their will be base ball themed crafts and an exhibition pick-up game on the lawn of the 1677 Whipple House.

Many seasons are available starting from 1880. I am currently replaying the 1880 Worcester Ruby Legs season. Best of all it is easy to update the ballpark images to get that authentic base ball look. The game tracks all of the stats for you and accounts for park factors, weather, etc. Play from 1880 right through the modern day. Manager options allow you to bunt, play the infield or corners in. In the last inning play the outfield in. Pitch around or Intentionally Walk hitters. All the nuances of baseball or base ball. Essex and Melrose lead off the fun

Newbury, MA - Sweltering temperatures did little to wilt the enthusiasm of the cranks or the spirited play of the ballists at Spencer Peirce Little Farm in Newbury today. A tripleheader was played amongst three teams, the Essex Base Ball Club,the Melrose Pondfeilders and the Newton Sandy Hooks (from CT).

Game 1 started off with Essex losing the bat toss and homefield advantage to Melrose. It wouldn't be all they would lose. In a mild upset, Melrose took advantage of Essex's misgivings in the field and stole an exciting 5-4 victory. Essex made a go of it in the 9th inning tallying twice but that still left them short by a run. Perhaps the result of bad karma when Cappy Sheehy tried to kill Arturo and I during his first at bat with a fair-foul strike right at us down the third base line. Sheehy is notorious for his deadly fair/foul ability and tortured opponents with it all day.

GAME 1
Essex - 4
Melrose - 5

Game 2 saw the good fortune of Melrose turn into batting practice for Newtown. The Sandy Hooks fell behind early but a big 3 run 7th inning followed by 7 tallies in the 8th was more than Melrose could stand. The Pondfeilders finished the day on a sour note but still had plenty to celebrate with the earlier win over their rivals.

Melrose - 5

"Swift Siff" stealing bases at will.

Game 3 saw Essex take out some of their anger over the opening game loss on Newtown. Swift centerfielder Ryan Sifferlen put a bad ankle out of mind as he took a mad dash that would make Enos Slaughter jealous. On a blown Cappy fair/foul attempt "Siff" stole second... on the overthrow raced to third... and as Newtown tried to regain their composure raced home. This game also featured an act of sportsmanship. When an Essex runner was called out attempting to steal third the Newtown 3rd baseman declared that he had beaten the tag. The umpire was so moved by the gesture that he awarded the bag to the runner. Of course... the Sandy Hook thirdsacker was waiting in the weeds with the hidden ball trick but the Essex lads are simply to professional to fall for that old gag. The final doesn't sound as exciting as this game actually was. Essex wins 11-5.

Newtown - 5

A couple of game notes. These games were played with stealing. Runners were allowed to lead and steal once the ball left the pitchers hand. The Ipswich Beer Truck was on hand offering quality beers and Jim-Jam hot dogs. Everyone seemed to approve!

Keeping the Lads Cool!

Bethany Goff, the Regional Manager of Historic New England joked about getting a 19th Century Fire Truck to hose the Essex Boys down to keep them from over-heating during tomorrow's triple header at the Spencer Peirce Little Farm over in Newbury tomorrow. Er.... at least I think she was joking!

It does serve as a reminder for all of us cranks that will be in attendance to come well healed with more than enough water and some snacks to keep our vitality and constitution strong.

It also made me ponder what the heck a 19th century fire truck might look like. Well, something like the one in the picture. It would be run mostly by steam and pulled by a horse. Oh, how the times have changed! In fact, even past the turn of the century steam fire trucks were in use. The difference is that they became self-propelled.

Here is to all the firefighters past and present that carried these clunkers around with them to keep the likes of us cranks safe.

And also a quick reminder in tomorrow's warmer weather to come enjoy the game carrying water and snacks. Festivities begin at 11am at Spencer Peirce Little Farm!

Brewers of Ipswich vs. Lynn Live Oaks on Georges Island

Georges island, Boston Harbor, Boston, MA- This was a battle of two teams in very different stages of development. The experienced older hands of Lynn taking on the up and coming youngsters of Ipswich. Your faithful blogger would be taking the field today for Lynn. That was until learning of a last minute trade to Ipswich to even the sides.

Georges Island in Boston Harbor provides the perfect setting for Vintage Base Ball. The field is set in the middle of the ruins of an old Civil War prison. The Park Service had period interepreters on hand and a large crowd turned out to watch the games.

The doubleheader today went in favor of the more experienced established club. Lynn outclassed Ipswich on the day, but that isn't to say that Ipswich didn't make it's plays or have it's moments. For awhile in the 2nd game Ipswich was actually threatening to tie. Ah, those fleeting moments when even futility makes sense.

And how did your faithful blogger do? I had my moments, and like everyone else on what years later would become the third base dugout, I had my moments to forget. Overall it was an amazing experience. The main thing I learned that if you are playing catcher beware of the dreaded "fair/foul" hit. Another consideration is that while Lynn may have won the day, as always.... Ipswich wins the free beer. My guess is that a show of hands as to which team left with the upper hand might actually go slightly in favor of Ipswich on that one.

I have to say that after fielding grounders and flies for an hour today that my confidence is full to the brim and my excitement level might just overflow the pitcher. Open Vintage Base Ball Game on July 30th

Essex Base Ball Club has announced an open vintage base ball game for those interested in playing on a vintage base ball club or who just want to come out and have some fun and learn the rules of the 1860's and play a little bit for that day.

Join the Essex Base Ball Club on Saturday, July 30th at Spencer Peirce Little Farm (5 Littles Lane, Newbury, MA) to learn the rules of 19th century ‘base ball’ and to try your hand at playing yourself. Take a few swings just for fun – or show us your skills and try out to join a new league we’re forming for the 2012 season! Lafayette Square Cyclones Versus The Murphysboro Clarkes

Venue: Lafayette Park, St. Louis, MO

Weather: Hot and humid...or a summer day in St. Louis.

Date: July 9, 2011.

1860's rules: underhand pitching and no gloves.

The Lafayette Square Cyclones were formed last season because the St. Louis Perfectos Base Ball club had too many members, so they formed a second club to accommodate them all.

They Cyclones wear the Lafayette Park logo on their shirts and caps.

Score keeping.

There was no umpire this match, so the batting team supplied one of their players. Both teams were on the honor system and sportsmanship was very prevalent.

The players on both clubs were very friendly and accomodating.

The base balls are hand stitched balls made out of a single piece of leather.

The bat and ball rack...there is also a modern rosin bag...

These were the introductions before the second match. They always play a double header weather permitting.

Essex Base Ball Club Takes Two!

Waltham, MA - The Essex Base Ball Club took both games of the doubleheader over the Melrose Pondfeilders today at Cornelia Warren Field in Waltham. The lads were clearly in top form, brimming with ginger and snap as the warm-ups commenced. Babe Ruth was in attendance as was a historical interpreter who called out the innings through a vintage battery powered amplifier. Our sources say it was this very same amplifier that Abe Lincoln used to command the Union Troops. What an advantage that must have been over the Confederacy!

The Bambino

The game was played using the rules of 1861. Hurlers pitched the ball in an underhand manner. Balls caught on a single bound were an out. No gloves were worn and a lemon peel styled ball was used.

Essex started off the first game on a strong note. Their strikers managed many deep shots testing the outfield of Melrose early. The Pondfeilders could do little but take them on the bounce for an out. Not the most gentlemanly way to gain an out but desperate times call for desperate measures. In the 3rd stanza it was obvious that these deep drives would finally sink a precariously floating Melrose ship. 8 crooked numbers were posted on the board for Essex. Melrose would get on the board tallying a single run in the 5th inning, but the final was a striking 8 to 1 score.

While many teams and cranks would have folded their tents at the site of such defeat, Melrose resumed the second game of the double header with vigor. Essex landed the first blow in the first inning but Melrose would strike twice in the third to take an early 2-1 advantage. It was obvious this got the dander of Cappy Sheehy and his Essex lads up as they then tallied 4 to end the third with a 5-2 advantage in favor of the home team. Melrose wasn't about to give in. They tallied yet another run and the score stood 5-3 midway through the 4th inning.

Essex then went back to the air. Two strikers reached and then a thunderous 3 run homerun excited the crowd! Cries of "well struck sir!" echoed through the crowd. Many great defensive plays followed including a quick stop of a hard hit ball by Sheehy at third base and the Essex outfield gently scooping the ball out of the air time and time again without fail. Essex would finish the afternoon taking the second game by a score of 13-3 despite the hard work and hustle of the Melrose Club.

It wasn't all fun and games for Essex, however. At the end of what seemed a triumphant afternoon, star centerfielder Ryan Sifferlen, substituting in at first base went up high in the air to catch an errant throw. This he did with the grace of a skilled wide out in the game of football, deftly recording the final out. However, his ankle buckled awkwardly as he landed and several minutes passed as he lay on the field. The crowd grew anxious and finally the ambulance arrived. He left the field sitting upright and alert but on a stretcher. The cranks gave him a good ovation and everyone involved hopes for a speedy recovery for him and a quick return to the ball field.

A large number of cranks attended filling bleachers on both sides of the field. A large number of spectators also gathered in both outfields enjoying the cool shade.

INJURY UPDATE: Ryan "Siff" Sifferlen's injury is not as serious as originally feared. He has sustained a sprained ankle and will be out a couple of weeks. That is good news for Essex!

Sun Melts Granite

Nashua, NH - The New Hampshire Granite sped their way to an early twelve to two lead against the Providence Grays only to watch that margin of victory slowly melt away in the midday sun.

A potent and nearly deadly mixture of speed and power gave the Granite what looked to be a sure victory. At one point, "Shoeless" Spencer, on loan from Melrose, was so fast that he ran out of his cleats on his way to a double! Providence missed several exchanges between pitcher and catcher leading to early runs on passed balls and wild pitches.

Through four complete innings the Granite stood ahead eighteen to eight. That is when the sun really heated up and it appeared that the Granite began to wilt some.

Part of the wilting was due to a phenomenal performance by the left fielder of the Grays. He deftly drifted back time and time again snagging moonshots off the bats of Granite strikers to retire the side. Then disaster struck. A fatigued looking New Hampshire side struggled time and time again to retire the Gray hands, often because of the glare of the sun in the fielder's eyes, leading to a nine run 8th inning. Four more runs in the top of the ninth gave the Providence Club a twenty-five to twenty advantage going into the final stanza.

Would this be all for the Granite? It didn't appear so. Captain Brian Donohue seemed to rally his squad. The first hand was retired but a runner then reached. Could a run at the lead be in order? A second out was recorded and although some might think it was bleak a run crossed the plate. Another striker reached and the hometown cranks began to think this game was winnable. Then disaster struck one final time. An ill-timed attempt to steal second ended the game with the thief caught red handed with his foot off the bag! Victory was for Providence!

This game was played by the rules of the late 1880's. Overhand pitching, free leading and stealing and small gloves were worn. The ball had more normal stitching and reacted off the bat similar to as what you would expect to turn of the century ball as opposed to the more often used ball of the 1860's. Catcher's wore equipment and the game was played on a standard diamond as opposed to just being held in a field. It was an interesting take on Vintage Base Ball that would look even more familiar to the casual observer than the more often used 1860's rules. And while this crank prefers the 1860's method of play, these rules provided a very entertaining afternoon. I will be attending and writing about other games using this style of play in the future. Thanks to the players of both teams for their hard work and play on such a warm day!

19th Century Vintage Civil War Era Base Ball Game

Come one, come all on this Sunday, July 10th as the Essex Base Ball Club will be facing the Melrose Pondfeilders at Cornelia Warren Field in Waltham. The game starts at 1pm and the Facebook invite mentions that kids and others will be able to scrimmage the team after the game. Cornelia Warren Field is located at the corner of Beaver St. and Waverly Oaks Rd. Look for a recap of the days events in The Vintage Base Ball Herald early the following week complete with pictures of the event.

The Essex Base Ball Club and Melrose Pondfeilders are both actively recruiting players. This would be an excellent opportunity if you are interested in playing to get out and meet the team and find out what vintage base ball is all about!

Ye Olde Ball Game

"This is how baseball was meant to be played," remarked the man in the lawn chair next to me. Only two pitches into participating in his first vintage base ball game as a crank, and he was already completely taken by the atmosphere. His father nodded his head in agreement. In fact, his son also nodded. Three generations enjoying a game of a century ago.

The Essex Base Ball Club took on the North Andover Alumni High School Baseball Team last weekend at idyllic Smolak Farms. The farm house providing a picturesque backdrop for a perfect day. Cranks (spectators) were treated to fresh salads and sandwiches and Treadwell's Ice Cream. They also saw some of the purest base ball ever played.

The ball was hand sewn and cross stitched. The pitcher tossed the ball in underhand to the striker. Outfielders recorded outs by scooping the ball up on a single bounce. The third baseman for the North Andover High School team plummeted head first into a duck pond chasing a foul ball! Players and spectators howled in approval.

"Can of corn," exclaimed my father-in-law! "Keep the peddle to the metal," he cheered imploring Essex to hold it's fragile lead. The cheer was replaced with "horse to the buggy," by the enthusiastic center field fanatics trying to keep with the spirit of the time period.

In the end, the teams split the double header, each club winning a game apiece. The fans however, won both games. What an amazing day!
